Saint John
athletes are expected to have a strong showing at the Canadian National Black
Belt Karate Championships early next month. Among the 26
athletes from New Brunswick, 22 are from the Port City area, including several
previous metal winners who are expected to perform well," says team captain
Nick Cunningham of Saint John. "We have a good team this year and will
represent the province well. Everyone is working really hard, everyone is
getting a shot but everyone will focus on the previous medal winners. They will
do New Brunswick proud."
Ryan Jimmo flies in the air as Darren Letson
tries to block. Both are second degree black belts who train out of the KIO
Karate Club on King Street.
Among the
athletes who have done well at recent nationals was local sensation Ryan Jimmo,
who picked up a gold two years ago and a silver last year. Hampton's Corey
Doucet won a bronze two years ago and went to Pan-American Games in Brazil last
year after winning a silver at the nationals. Saint John
KNB head coach Paul Oliver is expecting Jimmo and Doucet to do well, as well as
Fredericton's Nadie Bosse. "They are the three top
national-level competitors," he said. "I expect our adult women's team to do
all right. They are very strong."
Purple belt Vanessa Bosse delivers a kick during
a recent workout with second degree black belt Jill Bishop at the KIO Karate
Club on King Street. Bosse and Bishop will attend the national championships
next month.
