Karate New Brunswick
team captains shine at the 2011 Canadian national karate championships.
On the weekend of March 18-20, karate New Brunswick sent
10 athletes, 3 coaches and two officials to the 2011 national Karate
championships in Saint Hyacinthe Quebec. The team captains of the provincial
team, Miss Kate Campbell of the New Maryland Karate Club, and Mr. Gabriel Gates
of the Kings County Karate Club dominated the field with 5 national medals and
two national awards. Kate won for the 3rd consecutive
year, Gold in the under 21 -60Kg. women's kumite. In her second division she
won bronze in the senior women's -61 kg. kumite, and a further gold in the
women's open weight kumite. Gabriel won bronze in the senior men's -84kg.
category, then Silver in the men's open weight category.
To further the success, Kate additionally won the Senior
Sportsman award, and the Karate Canada Academic achievement award. We are all
so proud of her accomplishments. Both Kate and Gabriel
have been named to karate Canada's Senior national team, an event that has not
happened for over 25 years. Congratulations to you both. As a result of their
success, New Brunswick finished in 4th. place, behind Que., Ont., and B.C., who
were all sporting 60-90 athlete teams. Our medal success ratio for this
nationals was 50%. Although many of our athletes did well
in their categories, they just missed out on several occasions. The good news
is that even with our new young athletes, no one got hurt.
