My two children studied shotokan in nyc , my daughther is a brown belt and my son is purple. i am having a hard time finding a SKC in my area. If anyone knows of a school or instructor who can help. My son misses Shotokan very much and my daughter was so close to her black belt.

Hi Everyone! We think this guest book is a great idea...it was really nice to see some names we recognize. We are relatively new to karate, Paul starting training in January and myself in April and are already experiencing many of the benefits derived from studying the art. In particular I have noticed that I am becoming more self-confident and am holding myself straighter whenever I stand or sit. I feel much, much happier too. Our sensei Barry Welch is THE BEST and I know he cares about each and everyone of his students and he is very motivating to make us want to do our very best. We are older students; Paul is 56 and I am 47...how's that for old? We LOVE karate and plan to stay with it as long as our bodies allow!

I dont give my name because I still want to be allowed to train and dont know how my recent sensei would react... and I like the people in the club.
Outlawed by JKA?
Long time ago the JKA and other major Karate organisations decided NOT to teach the Taikyoku Shodan, Taikyoku Nidan, Taikyoku Sandan and Ten No Kata anymore. But WHY? I read a lot of material about it and these Katas seem to be the only Katas which have been created by Gichin Funakoshi. Gichin Funakoshi yes the Funakoshi who founded our Shotokan-Karate. The JKA claims him as our father and big sensei and they put his picture everywhere. So WHY dont they teach his Katas then!?
If you ask the JKA they say:
1."G. Funakoshi himself said Karate is in constant progress and will continue
to change".
Is that really a reason not to teach Big Senseis masterpieces anymore? On the one hand they call themself responsible for traditional Karate and on the other hand they ripp it off so bad. To me it just looks like an cheap excuse only.
2.Another excuse says Funakoshi himself did never put these Katas into his books. Thats true if you look at the early English translations. But when you have a look at the Japanese originals and the recent better translations. You will find em.
3rd and last reason. These Katas have not been trained by Funakoshi. In Funakoshis Dojo all the official Katas have been pinned to the walls just like in many Dojos today too. People whove been guests there said theyve seen Ten No Kata and all the others there too.
So all these reasons are really fishy and with some research you find out they are all a big fat lye. So there is still the question WHY they dont teach Big Senseis Katas? Of course these guys would be stupid if they tell us. Wouldnt they?
When you read old articles or later articles written by old main Karate guys you can easily see that there was a serious competition going on amongst some Big Senseis. Some have been young and impulsive, wanted to be better then other styles. Yes almost like in the movies "my Kung Fu is better than yours lets fight...".
I think when Funakoshi died. Some different people started to rule the international Karate scene. People who didnt like him, didnt like his family or didnt like his Karate-Do since many years. But Funakoshi was to famous to erase him totally without causing a lot of trouble. So at the surface they kept his name and his pictures. But behind the scenes they terminated his Karate silently. In some texts about Funakoshi they even pretend to be sad that these Katas are lost and not teached anymore. If they are really so sad, why dont they check the Books and the WWW?
My old German Sensei who owns much more than 500 martial art books teached us Taikyoku Shodan and Ten No Kata. That was some time ago and I didnt remember them exactly. To renew my knowledge I checked the Web and figured out that these Katas are unofficial and informations are really rare. Thankfully I could find a few informations about Ten No Kata (Kata of the universe) and Taikyoku Shodan. By coincidence I found some schemes about Taikyoku Nidan and Taikyoku Sandan too. Till then I didnt even know they exist. I dont think the JKA and other organisations still dislike Funakoshis Karate today. The dark figures must be dead till now or at least retired. Now Its just a habbit and not teaching Funakoshis Shotokan is almost tradition. If nobody knows and cares why should they start to teach our Big Senseis Karate proper again? Most humans are lazy by nature. Of course you are not lazy. Otherwise you wouldnt have read my article till the end. So please help me to spread the knowledge about the Katas which Sensei Funakoshi created for us.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE RARE MATERIAL I COULD FIND, send a short request to
tampella@hotmail.com
I will be happy to mail it to you as soon as possible.
If you have more informations about Funakoshis Karate please please send it to me.
And if my JKA theory is wrong please tell me too. It will be a relief to know that
the organisation we all belong to isnt as bad as it looks like.

The difference between training hard and just getting by is purely mental - everyone gets tired, the difference is who pushes through and who gives up! If everyone could do it it wouldn't be nearly as much fun, now would it? Nationals is a couple of weeks - tran hard, eat well, and sleep a lot. Sounds like a pretty good life! ;-)

Douglas Adams said: God puts an apple tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden and says, do what you like guys, oh, but don't eat the apple. Surprise surprise, they eat it and he leaps out from behind a bush shouting 'Gotcha.' It wouldn't have made any difference if they hadn't eaten it... because if you're dealing with somebody who has the sort of mentality which likes leaving hats on the pavement with bricks under them you know perfectly well they won't give up. They'll get you in the end.

hey!
Congratulations to everybody at the tournament and to whoever made the team. You guys did awsome and we're going to kick butt in Toronto in June! :)
Anyway, I have some suggestions on making money for the team. I've been thinking and I have asked alot of people about it (since the athletes have to pay their own way to toronto! :( ). here they are:

1) we can have a car wash and bake sale!
2)i see this all the time in stores and i have a friend who did this. She says it makes alot of money. We can put some donation jars in stores. On the jar , we can write about knb and info on toronto!
3) We can try to get some sponsors (we could get some parents to see if their company can sponsor us!)
4)We can perform demonstrations in the malls and have a donation jar.
5)recycling (if any of you guys have any bottle and cans to recycle)
6)My mom suggested an auction.People can donate some things they don't want and all the money can go to knb.
That's all i can think of at the moment but give me an e-mail on what you think! Thanks! Bye and good luck to all the athletes who are going to Toronto! Bye!

To Ian K:
I started studying karate at 43 yrs. Almost 3 times as old as you are. There are a number of other adults who have begun studying at the Dojo since then too!! If you had a friend join with you it might make you less nervous about it. Then again you will likely find that there are already others your age there who have recently joined. I wish I had begun karate when I was as young as you!!

I'm interested in putting my 7 yr old in Karate. Anyone have any information with regard to where in Saint John would be best for a child of this age, also pricing info and type of karate that would be most beneficial to him (I'm not trying to teach him to fight, but learn it as excercise and such)

Congratulations on your excellent website!

I consider myself fortunate to be able to study Chito-Ryu karate. Anyone who lived during my grandparent's generation would not have had the same opportunity. I had stopped training for about a year, but decided to resume about 3 months ago. I hope this time for good! My only regret is that I did not start when I was much younger. Better late than never!
I especially enjoy the social aspect, making new friends or meeting old ones. When I moved from N.S. (where I first started) to N.B. I met up with a high school classmate who I hadn't seen in about 15 years!
What I find particularly appealing about martial arts is that no matter what level you reach there are new things to learn, therefore you can never get bored with it.

I came into karate last fall with my young son. It has been a blast. I should have started this 35 years ago, lots of catching up to do. I have found the Gondola Point Club to be extremely well organized, & no matter who I have had for instruction thru the year, each & every were fantastic educators. Have attended 2 tournaments & participated in one. I also found both of these extremely well run, & was really impressed with the quality & consistency of the officiating. I also has a real fun time in the tourney in which I participated. I, & I hope my son, look forward to enjoying karate for many years to come. I am proud to be a part of this organization.

My name is Nicholas Cunningham and I am the Team captain for this years New Brunswick Karate Team. I am writing this comment in regards to the funding which we are receiving. KNB is a family and like a family we should support each other. This also means through funding. We are not receiving any money from KNB for the first time in 30 years. If we do not continue to support each other what will become of future teams. I ask all members of the board to come and watch a team training and see how much HEART the members of the team have and what you are taking away from them by not showing your support.

Nice web-site! But I would like to ask Chito-ryu practitioners here. I'm trying to research Goju-ryu history. I found on your site that Chitose Tsuyoshi sensei studied Rohai under Miyagi Chojun. I would like to ask, where did you take information? On other web-sites I read that Tchitose studied Rohai under Higaonna Kanryo.
Can you help me with this topic?

I was at the Black Belt Championships in Vancouver and that was the most action I have ever seen at a Karate Tournament. I travel the world presenting and educating the sports world on jaw-joint and brain injury prevention in combat sports. My product is called the WIPSS Jaw-Joint Protector and it was a giant success at the Nationals. If anyone would like more information on this revolutionary product, dial up our website or call me toll free at 1-888-424-wipss

Hi,my name is Phil i train at the karate club in Fredericton,N.B.(Rick Doak's). I very much enjoy my training and meeting different students and Sensei's and the many clinics that are held throughout the year.I didn't get to class as much as i wanted to this year because of work related injuries and an operation but i am going to resume my training with great earnest as soon as i heal.I also would like to add that i belive that karate is an ideal way for people to pick-up a healthy lifestyle and at the same time to enjoy themselves while learning a valuable lesson in self discipline and self defense also to expand the mind to be able to see new and different possibilities!!

G'day mate, from the land of Oz, down under. I started my karate in New Brunswick during the 60's and moved from Saint John to Toronto, to Vancouver and ultimately to Japan where I resided for nearly ten years. In 1995 I was recruited to Brisbane to modulate Australia's first tertiary level Martial Art's Instructor's diploma course and continue to reside here. I found your web-site quite by accident and could not resist visiting it. Although I have not been back to New Brunswick in nearly thirty years, I still consider it my home and where I got my first start in karate. I wish you all the best of luck and invite you to visit our 250 page web-site whenever you find the time. Kindest Regards, Patrick McCarthy
