In 1968 Sensei Robert
McInnes introduced the Art of Karate to New Brunswick for the first time at the
YMCA, Saint John. Sensei McInnes studied Karate in
Scotland before immigrating to Canada in July 1968. Karate was a new phenomenon
and it wasn't long before it spread to Nova Scotia, from these two Provinces
the Maritime Karate Association was formed. Karate started to take off, in
those early years Bruce Lee was a Martial Art sensation and a major reason for
karates success in growing. It soon became evident by 1972 that each
Province needed to take time to develop on their own. In
1972 The New Brunswick Karate Association was formed.
Sensei McInnes continued to develop Karate in the South,
while in the North Sensei Alcide Bourque who had returned home in 1970 to
Shediac from Toronto where he had learned karate continued developing Karate in
the North. At that time Chito-Ryu was the only style of
karate in New Brunswick, Tsuruoka Sensei is well known, as the father of Karate
in Canada and Sensei Bourque is his student. Sensei
McInnes became a student of Higashi Sensei in 1970 From
1972 to 1986 the Association was known as the New Brunswick Karate Association
In 1986 It became incorporated and was given a new name, Karate Nouveau / New
