Matsubayashi
Shorin-Ryu
There are many styles of
Karate widely practiced throughout the world, all of them are derivatives from
the original styles developed on the small island of Okinawa. Shorin styles of
Karate are some of the oldest of Okinawan Karate. The Late Supreme Master
Shoshin Nagamine is the founder of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu Karate.
Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate can trace it's lineage from Chinese Kung-Fu to the
original Okinawan Karate, Te. It also is closely related to the
other two styles of Shorin Ryu, Kobayashi and Shobayashi. This because two of
Hanshi Nagamine's most influencial teachers were Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu.
Hanshi Nagamine created the name "Matsubayashi" out of respect for two great
Sensei who taught two of his teachers (Kyan and Motobu). These two masters were
Bushi Matsumura and Kosaku Matsumora.
The head of
Okinawan Budokai, sometime referred to as, Ota-Kai, is Sensei
Eihachi Ota, 9th Dan. He is pictured above. Sensei Ota was a direct student of
Hanshi Nagamine and also trained under Sensei Masao Shima. Sensei Ota received
his 7th Dan from Hanshi Nagamine, his 8th and 9th Dan from his last teacher
Sensei Masao Shima. Sensei Ota was a direct student of Hanshi Nagamine.
Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu and Ota Sensei are
represented in New Brunswick by the New Brunswick Karate Dojo Association
(NBKD). NBKD's main headquarters is in St Stephen, New Brunswick, at the
Milltown United Church Hall. The Chief of Operations for NBKD is Sensei Bill
Conley, 4th Dan. NBKD also has a Dojo in Blacks Harbour, and in McAdam,
NB, and one in Calais, Maine. .
